How Today's Gold Price Works

From Spot Price to Cash in Hand

The gold spot price at the top of this page is the global market price for one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of pure, 24-karat gold. It moves continuously while markets are open, which is why the numbers here refresh every 60 seconds. To find the value of a single gram, divide the spot price by 31.1 — then adjust for how pure your item actually is.

Most jewelry isn't pure gold. 14K is 58.5% gold, 18K is 75%, and 10K is 41.7% — the rest is alloy metals that add strength but no melt value. Our live payout table above already does this math for you: it shows what we pay per gram for each karat, based on the current spot price and up to 95% of melt.

Gold Price Per Gram Today, by Karat

Use the Quick Payout Estimator above to get a live dollar figure: pick your metal and karat, enter the weight in grams, and it calculates your estimated payout against this second's spot price. Bring 14K, 18K, 22K, 24K, scrap, broken chains, coins, or bullion — we test everything with an XRF analyzer in front of you, weigh it on a calibrated scale, and pay on the spot in cash, Zelle, or Venmo.

Why We Pay More Than the Pawn Shop

Pawn shops and most jewelers pay 40–60% of melt and count on you not knowing the spot price. We start from the live rate on this page and pay up to 95% of it — no fees, no deductions, and no obligation. See the number, see the scale, see the math. If it isn't the best offer you've been shown, walk out and keep your gold.

Gold Price FAQ

Common Questions

The live gold spot price is shown at the top of this page in US dollars per troy ounce, refreshed every 60 seconds from global metals markets. One troy ounce is 31.1 grams, so the per-gram price is the spot price divided by 31.1. Silver spot is shown alongside it.
It depends on the karat (purity). Pure 24K gold per gram is roughly the spot price divided by 31.1. 18K is 75% of that, 14K is 58.5%, and 10K is 41.7%. The live "per gram" payout for each karat is listed in the gold card above and updates in real time.
We test your item with an XRF analyzer to confirm its exact karat, weigh it on a calibrated scale in front of you, and pay based on the live spot price — up to 95% of melt value. There are no fees or deductions taken out of your payout.
Not quite — the spot price is for pure (24K) gold. Most jewelry is 14K or 18K, so your payout is the spot price adjusted for the item's actual purity and weight. Our estimator above gives you a live figure; the final offer is set after in-person testing.
Gold and silver trade globally almost around the clock, so the spot price moves continuously during market hours. The prices on this page refresh every 60 seconds so you always see current rates before you visit our Montclair store.
Yes. Most pawn shops and jewelers pay 40–60% of melt value. We pay up to 95% of the live spot price and show you the weight and the math on the scale, with zero obligation — if our number isn't the best you've seen, keep your gold.
